What are those 3 types of heat transfer?
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Conduction: The transfer of energy when objects are touching from particle to particle. Look at the diagram above, conduction is happening when this person's hand is directly touching the pot's handle making his/her hand hotter. NOTE: THESE OBJECTS MUST BE TOUCHING FOR CONDUCTION TO OCCUR.
Convection: The transfer of heat when warm particles move in currents. Asking yourself what that means? Basically when particles are heated they become lighter so they move higher and the cooler particles sink to the bottom. Then the particles on the top become less warm they move to the bottom and so on. This happens over and over again. In the picture above convection is happening with the water in the pot. Convection will happen until that water's temperature becomes stable and the person removes the pot.
Radiation: The transfer of heat through waves. Objects DON'T have to be toughing. In the picture above radiation is happening when the heat from fire is heating up the water in the pot even though the pot is not directly touching the fire. Note: Radiation flows from HOT OBJECTS to Cooler Objects not vice- versa.
